Dear Parishioner, The Pharisees continue to test Jesus with a question about the greatest commandment. Jesus answers the Pharisees’ question with a two-fold summary. Jesus says that all of the commandments can be summarized in two commandments: love God and love your neighbour. Both of these were central elements of the religious tradition Jesus learned from his Jewish community. Indeed these continue to be central aspects of contemporary Jewish religious understanding. Jesus’ response to his questioners proposed an integral connection between these two aspects of the Jewish Law. Love of God finds its expression in our love for our neighbor.

Dear Parishioner, In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us of the necessity of giving things their proper importance. Read Matthew 22:15-21. The Herodians and Pharisees were giving too much importance to the issue of the payment of taxes. Jesus reminds them that loving and honouring God is of greater importance. In family life we do many important things, but we remember that God is of the greatest importance in our lives. Pray together that your family will learn to keep things in proper perspective, remembering to keep God first in your lives.

Dear Parishioner, In the parable of the wedding feast, Jesus offers an image of the kingdom of heaven using the symbol of a wedding banquet. In today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah and in today’s psalm, the Lord’s goodness is evident in the symbol of a feast of good food and wine. Jesus’ listeners would have been familiar with the image of a wedding feast as a symbol for God’s salvation. They would consider themselves to be the invited guests. Keeping this in mind helps us to understand the critique Jesus makes with this parable. The context for this parable is the growing tension between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem. This has been the case for the past two Sundays and will continue to be true for the next several weeks. Jesus’ message in the parable cautions against exclusive beliefs about the kingdom of heaven. The parable also teaches about humility. Those who assume that they are the invited guests may find that they have refused the invitation, and so others are invited in their place. To accept the invitation is also to accept its obligations. God wants our full conversion in complete acceptance of his mercy.

Dear Parishioner, Day for Life is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. Day for Life is celebrated today Sunday 1st October. We are all aware that there is currently a campaign to remove the pro-life article from the Constitution with the Repeal the 8th appeal. Today is an opportunity for us to reflect on the meaning of life and the value we place on every life from conception to natural death. Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Life Within: O Mary, Mother of the Life Within, all life we entrust to you; The life of every expectant mother and the child within her womb: The life of every human body, the life of every human soul; The life of every newborn child and the life of all grown old. You held the Lord to your own heart and drew Him so close in.

So draw us now in all our needs, O Mother of the Life Within. Amen.

Offertory Collection: last Sunday’s collection was €910-many thanks for your generosity, it’s very much appreciated.

Dear Parishioner,

The core message of this parable we listen to this weekend, is that God’s love is a free gift and not earned. Can you recall moments when you were particularly conscious of the gifts that God has given you by counting all the blessings that you have, no matter how small. ‘It is too late now’ are words sometimes uttered to justify doing nothing about a situation. This parable tells us that where love is involved, it is never too late. Can you recall times when you got a positive response after taking action when you thought it was ‘too late’?

Doon GAA Colours, the Blood and Bandage

Dan O’Hara presented Doon with their first set of Red and White jerseys in the GAA Golden Jubilee year 1934 in the colours of his native Cork. Before that Doon usually wore Black and Amber and sometimes Blue and White the jerseys were a knitted red set with long sleeves and white collars and cuffs.

Dan O’Hara was a native of Doon and Macroom Co Cork and was married to Annie Ryan Mahoney of Bank Place in St Patricks Church Doon on September 14th 1932. He was 51 years old on marriage. His best man was his great friend Gerald Stapleton of Carnahalla and bridesmaid was Maggie Ryan the bride’s first cousin and next door neighbour. . He came to Doon as a baker, and ran a shop with his wife Annie and also helped in the bakery next door ran by Maggie, Jim and Tommie Ryan Mahoney, first cousins of his wife Annie. Annie and Dan O’Hara had no family and their cousins Jim, Tommy, and Maggie did not marry and so the family name died out. Both houses were inherited by Kitty Kennedy of Cooga and later sold to the present owners the Martin family of Bank Place. The houses fell into disrepair and were eventually knocked. The old O’Hara house was near Hayes of Bank place and Maggie’s Ryan’s house was near Martins.

Dan O’Hara was Chairman of Doon GAA in 1935, 1936 and 1937. The Secretary was Sean Cunningham of Main Street, in 1935 and 1936 and Pakie Ryan in 1937. The Treasurer in all three years was George Lonergan, Kilmoylan.

Dan O’Hara is buried in St Fintans cemetery Doon [St Patrick’s section ] with his wife Annie. He died on 15th of September 1957 aged 76 years, his wife Annie died on 14th of November 1969. The gravestone has been largely unattended since. In recent days it has been cleaned and the wording rewritten. This work was carried out by Raymond Kelly Monumental Works Tipperary Town.

The jerseys have remained the same to the present day. In GAA Centenary year 1984 an important feature was added to the jersey. Br. Tom Doohan the principal of Doon CBS Primary school held a competition to design the new crest. The winning entry was by Michael McGrath from Hollyford one of his pupils.

Dear Parishioner,

This Sunday’s gospel tells us about real love and how it dovetails with real forgiveness. It can often be quite easy to love a friend, even an acquaintance. It can be a lot more difficult to love a family member, or someone that may have hurt us or made us feel insignificant. Real love is about forgiveness. Real love is about embracing pain, embracing embarrassment caused by another, working hard to show unconditional love. God loves us in an unconditional way; this means that unlike so many deals we hear about, there are no terms and conditions to apply! We are loved in all our brokenness and narrow mindedness, our pride and our stubbornness. Because of this unconditional love, God calls us to be the same with others, not just to people we occasionally meet but with the people in our family, the ones who irritate us and perhaps annoy us on a more regular basis! Treat others as you are treated by God: a big ask, but asked of each one just the same.

Dear Parishioner,

This Sunday’s gospel tells us that we have been asked by Jesus himself to come together in prayer, in times of difficulty, in happiness and we are asked to do this regularly. Sometimes it might seem the easiest option to ‘skip’ Mass just this Sunday. Too much going on and too many people to be dropped here, there and everywhere. Back to school lists to be fulfilled, long summer days sadly coming to an end and God knows we are trying our best! When we don’t feel entirely comfortable about a decision we often rationalise it, creating reasons for our actions or lack of them. Jesus tells us that coming together in his name is a deep respect for his word and will never go unnoticed or unanswered. We come together as a group of people within the Christian family each Sunday, blessed and broken, as fragile and vulnerable as each other. It is in the coming together that there is traction, there is unity, we build our additional voices in love, a shared devotion in person that tells us that we are a community of believers, a community of faith and we share a common goal. A community who are trying and making an effort, together and praying for each other..
